3 Ways a Professional Organization can SAVE your Business

Tammira Lucas #NBMBAA15

OMG!!! That’s exactly how I feel. I could not wait to share this blog with you. This week I had the most amazing opportunity in my life thus far. I had the opportunity to participate in the Whiteboard Challenge business pitch competition at the National Black MBA Association conference (#NBMBAA15) in Orlando, Florida. I competed against nine other amazing individuals with great business concepts. It was truly an honor and privilege. If you asked me five years ago would I be here I would probably laugh at you, but I am proud of my hard work for getting me here.

Now let me tell you more of the good stuff. The NBMBAA is a professional organization of African American MBA’s with chapters around the world. I am a part of the District of Columbia chapter, and I have to admit two things: 1. I haven’t been active in my chapter and 2. This was my first time attending the conference and I should be ashamed of sharing that information, but I have great reasons! From this day forward I have pledged to make as many events as possible and never to miss a conference again. I have always heard amazing things about the conference, but it surpassed my expectations. This conference was AMAZING. I have never attended such a well thought out event that provide VALUABLE content mixed with fun and motivation.

Attending the conference opened my eyes on why it’s important for you to be part of a professional organization. Many of my colleagues are part of professional organizations, and I always thought of it as being just another thing to fill my schedule. As entrepreneurs we know that time is valuable, and we need to spend time where it matters the most. Let me be the first to tell you that finding a professional organization and being active should be one of those things that matter the most in your business and personal life.  There are many professional organizations out there so finding one should be hard. But please take my advice and join. Attending this conference has opened my eyes on what value these organizations can bring into your life but it also saved my business. Let me share 3 Ways a Professional organization can and have to SAVE your Business:

1.    Network with EXPERIENCED Individuals
I am sure you have probably heard me a million times say “Your Network is your Legacy worth.” Well, that’s true here but it’s a little different. I had the opportunity to network with individuals from VARIOUS industries whom been in business for many years. They have accomplished things that I am trying to accomplish which mean they are the BEST person to learn from.  Being open to learning from EXPERIENCED individuals is an opportunity to for you to learn some “old tricks” and teach some “new tricks.” To close the gap of learning from millennials and baby boomers we all must be open to learning. Being part of a professional organization such as the #NBMBAA gives you this opportunity because there are people all ages that are apart. Not only did I learn so much but they gave me TONS of resources and contacts!!!

2.    Builds your Credibility
Professional organizations build your credibility in your respective industry. Most organizations don’t just accept anyone, and you must hold some credentials to get in.  Not only does it require you to have some credentials but it also helps you obtain additional credentials you can utilize in your professional life. Part of the #NBMBAA15 conference allowed members to take the Project Management Certification, which is an awesome opportunity in the business industry. Most organizations host several events where you can learn more about your industry and also get certified in other things. The more credible you are, the more attractive you look in your business.

3.    Teach you Balance
I am sure you are probably wondering how balance can save your business and what do that have to do with a professional organization. Well, professional organizations always hold events that are a mix of fun and work. This teaches you that everything does not have always to be business business business! What you will realize is that once you learn the balance in your business it will help you to free up some time so that you can become more active in your organization. When you become active, you can also display your gifts and talents to everyone in the organization (this is when Word of Mouth marketing happens) which has now help you grow your business (BOOM DROPS MIC). Did you see how that worked? Balance also allows you to think outside the box more when it comes to your business. You don’t want to have a business overload that turns into brain block (I HATE BRAIN BLOCK).

Professional organizations bring many opportunities in your business that can save your business. Attending this conference allowed me to pitch in front of investors who now want to invest in my business! Save your business and join a professional organization!!!

What are some of your favorite Professional Organizations?
